MY NAME IS JOHN.
I was another product of the worlds version of life succession. After High school, go to college, pick a career that you think you can tolerate for 35 or 40 years, and live for the weekends until you can retire and have time freedom.
But it doesn't have to be that way. You can have a career that you don't just tolerate for 35-40 years. What if you have a career that you can thrive in.
I graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S in Construction Management and entered the industry immediately after that. I have been in commercial construction for 20 years along the front range. I started running my own jobs 2 years before my peers that I graduated with and was promoted through the ranks to General Superintendent by the time I had turned 35. All because I had a solid foundation of the construction building systems from formal education and a strong mentor to teach me on the job.
Construction has been a long standing vibrant industry and will continue to have strong demand for professionals. Even recently, entering into the beginning of 2020 when COVID became a worldwide panic, the construction industry, along with many others, was threatening to be shut down. Quickly, what appeared to be a stable paycheck, now was almost non-existent overnight. But, due to the strong necessity of construction, it was one of the selected industries to be deemed essential and continued to move forward with some new challenges. At that point I realized what a great choice it was to build a career in commercial construction and help others have a future in this industry.
After graduating college with a B.S in Construction Management from a reputable university, I stepped into the commercial construction world with a mid size general contractor and quickly realized, even with years of studying, there was a lot of “knowledge gap” with how the building systems worked, so managing the construction process was not very clear.
Starting out I had a great but tough boss & mentor, who took the time to make sure I knew what it took for our trade partners to get their work done so they made money and so did we. I took his lessons and started passing them down to my foreman, field engineers, assistant superintendents and interns so they could have a strong start in their careers and be successful as I had been.
Several years ago I was asked to step into a general superintendent role and one of the first tasks assigned to me was to be a 1:1 mentor for a field foreman who had aspirations to become a job superintendent. I was unsure I had enough knowledge to pass along to him but quickly realized I had more experiences than I thought to pass along.
As a General Superintendent I found many of our people were not properly prepared for their job assignments and we set out for a solution to better train people and set them up for success and less burn out. From there it grew to becoming part of the company’s Learning & Development Committee and I developed a passion for developing people that would lead to their success and the company's success.

I know what it is like to be behind the curve when it came to commercial construction knowledge and without a strong teacher I wouldn’t have become a titled superintendent and run my own projects sooner than my peers that I graduated with.
